The U.S.
elections have got me thinking about the political regimes we have today. The
majority of countries have a chosen democracy as their regime. But there
are still some countries that have communism. Because I am from Slovakia I learned
about the communist regime in our country. I watched documentaries, heard
stories, watched films and learned about it in our history class. I was really
moved by a documentary that was about the government snitches. When you
did something against the regime you could have been punished severely. But if
the crime against the regime wasn’t a big one, you could have been given
the opportunity to become a government snitch. You would get paid for accusing
people that talked trash about the system or just listened or watched banned
material (like American bands or seeing a foreign movie). These people
would continue their normal lives and they had to inform to a special
department about anyone that did „illegal“ things. So you could never be sure
that the person you met isn’t a snitch. You had to be very careful when
talking in public because apparently there were many people that were snitches
at the time. My father told me that when he was in college one of his roommates
was indeed a governments snitch. Can you imagine living with someone that could
end your opportunities in the world forever? If you got reported you would get immediately
dropped out of college and no one would ever hire you. Well, maybe you could be
a cleaning lady but my father would never be where he is today if he wasn’t
very careful. And that was very hard at the time because everyone hated the
system. Everyone had the urge to talk trash about the government and share
their thoughts with the other people. And he was sleeping next to a person
that could make his life miserable in so many ways that I am having chills
just when I am thinking about it. He would never meet my mother, he would
never get into the world of business and he wouldn’t get his degree ( btw he
finished college with a red diploma which is the most prestigious you could
have achieved). Anyway, I am really happy that the world fought against
that regime and that today the most of us can live in the world where you can
express yourself and be free. Because freedom is one of the most important
thing in life. If you aren’t free, you can never achieve your maximum life
potential.
